I am…

Thanking God for:
::some friendships that have weathered a very rough year
::laughing with my husband
::a very generous donor at my daughters bake sale for a local homeschooling family who unexpectedly lost their husband/father
::not getting sprayed by a skunk

Saturday night Chris and I came home and I went over to the chicken coop to put a water bucket back inside the coop. As I walked up to the coop, flashlight in hand, I saw a skunk! Inside the coop! I shined the light on him or her, I did not get close enough to tell the difference…how do you tell the difference? Anyway, I saw him (or her) slip under the wall into an adjoining, vacant coop. Someone had left a 4 wheeler over there, so I got on it to ride back to the house. But it was cold and it didn’t want to start. So I ran back to the house yelling “Chris! Skunk! Chris! Skunk!” Of course he didn’t hear me because we have six talking children and a babbling baby. I ran in the house yelling “Skunk!!” so Chris grabbed his shotgun, told a kid to hold the dog and the rest to stay inside the house. We went back over to the coop and the skunk had slipped under a fence and was out in the field. I held the flashlight while Chris shot the skunk. Sunday afternoon Chris and the boy went over to the coop and filled in a couple of holes with concrete.

Pondering:
“The devil loves to fish in troubled waters.” The children and I listened to a sermon the other day during lunch and the priest used that phrase.

Praying:
I am praying for my children. This world is a tough place. This world tells you, you have to to keep up. This world will turn on you and drop you in a heartbeat.

Waiting For:
Chris said the weather is getting ready to get interesting: rain, snow, blizzard conditions all expected this week.

Thinking About:
Ok, you have got to watch this video, Back to Eden. I know, it’s an hour and 45 minutes, it is so worth it if you garden or want to garden.

Wearing:
I told you all how much Chris hated my pajama’s so I threw them out, well I bought a pair of fleecy pajama pants and a super soft tee shirt to go with it. Chris likes these. I have my hair back in a wet pony tail and some house slippers on my cold feet.

Trying:
I ordered some shampoo bar samples from Apple Valley Natural Soap.  I washed my hair Friday and Sunday with it.  So far it’s ok.  Friday was much better.  I used an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse on Friday and my hair felt lovely.  Sunday I did not, at first, but had to go back and rinse with the ACV.  It feels better than before the rinse.

Captured:

My sister came over last week and showed me how to make soap.  Here are the Lavender Oatmeal Bars I made.

  1. We don’t have skunks in my part of the world, but I have read enough skunk stories to feel for you. I must say that was an excellent anti-skunk collaboration there with even the kids joining in!

I pray the same thing for my children, Jenny — to recognize that the world is a tough place, but to live in it uncompromising in our faith and the sense of self that goes with it.

Hey, that’s a good batch of soap there. The medicinal benefits of oatmeal and the scent of lavender. Have a good week :-)

  2. There’s so much to like in this post! I see you’re reading about Lectio Divina. You have my approval. I’ll have to watch the gardening video later. Gotta get dinner now.

  3. I love the skunk story! So funny. (Have you ever read the Outlander series? Funny skunk story in the fourth book, if you have…if not, get on it!) And I love that soap, it looks so fun!

  4. Interested in the Lectio Divina book you mentioned, Jenny.

    Close call with that skunk!

I have been thinking about making soap, but the lye aspect does frighten me. I have this video, which contains very clear demonstrations:

Okay, I’ll be back with my daybook later or tomorrow.

    Thank you for sharing!

  5. Oh dear…a skunk is not a welcome guest for sure. LOL
Here in the south we have battled bats, and it’s illegal to harm them in any way.
I’m going to watch that video. I’ll have a country garden yet!
Blessings for a beautiful week, Jenny. +

  6. I’m with you Jenny on the praying part. We’ve been talking a lot lately about having to learn hard lessons and that is exactly what the world is good at teaching! Oh how I miss those trips to the chicken coop, even when it means chasing predators :) Waiting to see what tomorrow’s snow storm brings to us. Good luck on your end.

  7. Hi Jenny! So good to visit with you again! I enjoyed your CWA for today and will try to get linked up later this morning. I need to run to the grocery store quickly…before snowmageddon #2 arrives…also referred to by some around here as the Blizzard of Oz! LOL (No shortage of Oz jokes when you live in Kansas.) Anyway, you are the second person to link the Eden video and since YOU posted it, I now thin I need to watch it. We started gardening about 3 years ago and each year our backyard garden grows a bit bigger! We’v also begun planting fruit trees and bushes. I’d love to try to make soap. I’ll need to check out your other blog further and read the recipe.

    Blessings,
    Valerie

    • Hi Valerie. My grandparents are in Kansas ans when I talked to them on Saturday, they had 15 inches of snow and more was coming! As a young girl, my grandma would wrap bread bags around our feet and let us go play in the snow drifts in the ditches…such great memories!

Oh my gracious, the movie is excellent. My sister kept saying, “Ya’ll need to watch this before you get too far in your garden plans…ya’ll need to watch this…” I kept putting it off and putting it off. I am so glad we did finally watch it, before we got too involved in our garden plans. (It’s a rainy day here, I may just watch it again!)

  8. My husband is enjoying your voyage in gardening…I just sent him the video.

So…is soap hard to make…it sounds like it when you read how to do it. I bet they smell sooooo good…love lavender!

    Have blessed days this week…

    • Good Morning Theresa. Soap is not hard tom make. We used our crockpot! Working with Lye did scare me, but my sister assures me the more I work with it, the less scary it will become.

I instantly thought of you and Chris when I started watching the movie. My Chris actually sat and watched almost all of the movie it was that good. And of course my children who have been dreaming gardening with me did. I know you all will enjoy it. But watch it now before you do or plan any more gardening.

      • Crockpot for soap making. I have to explore that!

  9. Eek, a skunk! Thanks for the video suggestion. I will check it out. Your homemade soap sounds lovely!

    • Hi Erica. I hope you enjoy the gardening movie. I’m having to restrain myself and use the old soap I have first before I start using mine/ So, since I can’t use it yet, I look at it and smell it, lol!
