Book Club::The Imitation of Christ

Good Morning Ladies! Is anyone still reading The Imitation of Christ  with me?  Good…Let’s get started.

Since I skipped the Book Club post last week (not intentionally), I thought we would start Book Three today.

But first, can I give you something? I made a Thanksgiving printable for you. This prints out to be about a 5×7, but not exactly. I think this Thanksgiving printable would look great on your table. Theses could be used as place setting propped up in front of the plates or hung on the back of the chair or used as a Thanksgiving mobile.

Concerning Holy Communion

I find it providential to be in the book on Holy Communion during one of the most gluttonous times in our country. We have just witnessed the most expensive Presidential campaigns in history and on the heels of all that economic talk, we move right into the holidays where more is deemed better.

The bread which I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.
–Thomas a’Kempis Book III Introduction

But our Lord says He is ‘the life of the world.’ And this life is not some poor representation of a well lived life, no, not at all; words like ‘abundance’ and ‘banquet’ are used when describing the life found only in the joyful reception of Christ–Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity–in Holy Communion.

? How do you recognize the ‘abundance’ of Christ in your daily life…or do you?

For thou art the sweet reflection of the soul, and he that eateth thee worthily shall be partaker and heir of everlasting glory.
–Thomas a’Kempis Book III Chapter III

And that–is abundant living. That is living this one life to the fullest…’everlasting glory’ is such a stark contrast to Black Friday isn’t it?

Stir up my heart unto thee and deliver me from all dullness.
–Thomas a’Kempis Book III Chapter IV

? How could that one sentence become a life changing prayer?

Let’s discuss The Imitation of Christ .  Let’s talk about Holy Communion and living in spiritual abundance verses worldly gluttony.

Welcome! I’m Jenny, the administrator of Suscipio and author of The Catholic Child’s Teaching Bible©. I have been married to Chris 20 years, strictly by the grace of God. We have seven precious souls from teen to baby. I hope my personal contribution to Suscipio shows what my life really looks like; It’s messy and beautiful and blessed beyond measure.

  1. Thanks for the printable! I’ll have to print it out ASAP!

BTW, it’s from the movie “Holiday Inn”. I think.

    • You’re exactly right Kim, it is from Holiday Inn; one of my all time favorite movies. Send me an email with your mailing address.

I hope you enjoy the printable. My husband has been hunting so I’ve had some extra time on my hands late in the evening to experiment with making some printables.

  2. Here I am home sick today with the flu contemplating this.

Abundance. I have learned that when the cupboards are more bare than they ‘should’ be HE always provides, when there are no answers he provides them. The answers always come in abundance and most times look very different than expected. Christmas is coming. I have abundance in my home…with very little, on one small income. My family shares homemade chicken noodle soup around a round table. I bought some things second hand for Christmas (got some really amazing generous mommies etc out there!) and I am avoiding the malls. Especially on the weekends. The message is in order to live in abundance we must purchase our happiness. My daughter and I just made 3D stars out of paper for wreaths…we are wrapping books from the library to have a surprise every night in a story, gathered as a family. We have our struggles, more money would be nice…but then you HAVE MORE and MORE worries and it just goes on. The thing is…only HE is everlasting and that is why we are always left thirsty. Yes, quite a contrast to Black Friday.

To have a simple life is to be dull…well that’s what the media tells us. If one wants to be delivered from ‘dullness’ it will only happen with the joy of Christ and in giving, not getting. Life is never dull when you are a mommy either! haha.

Jenny, thank you for taking these concepts and applying them to whats going on in life RIGHT NOW. I appreciate that and it has given much food for thought as we quickly approach advent.

    • Ugh! So sorry you’re home sick. Thankfully we believe our suffering can have merit, not only for us but for those we offer our sufferings up for.

I avoid the malls like the plague anytime of year. In the last 20 years I think I’ve gone maybe a dozen times. If that’s not considered ‘dull’ I don’t know what is!

My thoughts turned to Thanksgiving and Christmas because this morning there was a news report about some major retailers starting ‘Black Friday’ Thanksgiving night. Really!?!? The hours from 6pm-12am or 1am or 4am or whenever stores open now on ‘Black Friday’will make that much difference?

I hate to say it and sound so old, but I remember when stores were closed on Sundays.
