Catholic Woman’s Almanac {CWA}

Moments of Gratitude
::air conditioning
::Chris’ hard work to provide for our family
::one of the girls making homemade ice cream each week-end
::drinking ice water out of a Mason Jar
::Sunday afternoon naps
::listening to my children sing old Doris Day songs
::a good nursing bra

**{We’re all girls here…I think every woman should invest in a good, I mean a really good bra. It makes a HUGE difference in how you look. I went to this place in the city that specializes in bras — from size 26A to 60OO. They are a hands on place, literally, but the bras fit so well. Now I know why I was so discouraged trying on bras at Target, they didn’t fit. I haven’t treated myself to good bra in almost 8 years…it was time.}

Beauty in the Ordinary
Our fields are almost mowed and full of freshly rolled hay bales. As much as I dislike the heat of summer, I love to see all the hay being mowed and then baled. My mother in law {†} used to call them ‘cinnamon rolls’

From the Kitchen
::everything bagels with lunch meat/cheese/lettuce/tomatoes and chips
::refried beans/tortilla chips/cheese
::hamburgers/salad
::sloppy joes/salad
::tacos/beans/guacamole

Praying
::for a friend who just lost her brother unexpectedly
::for me, as a mother.
::for our parish
::for a friend who is searching for her St Joseph

Memorizing
I have not worked on the Magnificat at all, not one word. It would sound lame to say I’m too busy right now, so I won’t say it.

My girls went shopping last week with our friend who was visiting. One of my girls bought me this cup.

?My sister & I were talking about what items we felt were worth an investment. I obviously think bras, but I also think a pair of good shoes. What items do you think are worth the investment?

Welcome! I’m Jenny, the administrator of Suscipio, a home for the Catholic woman on the web. I have been married to Chris almost 20 years, strictly by the grace of God and we have seven precious souls, one brand spankin’ new. I have blogged for years over at A Minute Captured, but recently felt God leading me to start a communal website for Catholic women. I hope my blogging shows what my life really looks like, no puttin’ on airs around here. It’s messy and beautiful and blessed beyond measure.

  1. Bras, yes, also a good winter coat if you live in a place that gets cold. Get a good and long one made of nice materials and it will last you!

  2. Jenny, Love that cup..I’m glad you said that about bras…: D
    Last year I finally spent the money on a good one that fit and lasted longer that 2 months.I was putting off spending the money on a new one..but it’s time again.
    An item for me that’s a good investment has been good quality tailored button down shirts..A few good colors and you can mix and match, dress it up or down. Very versatile if they’re made well. +

  3. Good Morning, Jenny!!
    Good Morning, Friends!

    Yes to the good bras! Especially if you are ‘amply blessed’ and need serious structural reinforcement. Don’t ever, ever hesitate to invest in well-fitted quality bras, and this includes a proper sport bra, too, if you’re in to running, biking, etc. The same rule applies to swimsuits. And panties! If the elastic is all frayed and irritating and if they’re stained or so stretched out that they slide when you walk, it’s time for new ones! Your body will be grateful.

    Other things worth a serious investment? Education. A reliable vehicle. Properly fitted running shoes. Vegetables. A deep freezer. In the summertime, a stick of body glide and a tube of anti-chafing gel.

    Decadent chocolate.

    • Right on Angela…a good swimsuit…forgot about that.

      Land’s End has ones with bras built in. They are extremely well made. I have had the same one for many summers.

      • I love me some Lands End! I fell in love with their dresses and tees this summer so now I’m hooked.

    • serious structural reinforcement

      One might think you’re an engineer. {grin}

      • It may take an engineer to navigate around some of these hills, valleys and curves……:)

    • Love your list! ……..understanding the amply blessed part in more ways than one! ;-D I just wished that included my vertical dimensions as well! HAHAHAHA

      • HAHAHAHA!!!! Me too! Vertically challenged, that is.

    • Angela you make me smile with your posts lol…

      I am due for probably all of these things, since the winter I have lost 21lbs. My clothes are bagged a bit and this weekend I am going to buy a sundress that makes me feel pretty. I think one of the best things a woman can do is have the right bra. Not just for looks but your back too!!!

  4. I’m with you on the bra thing, just never got around to doing it! Thank you for hosting this peaceful look into other Catholic women’s lives. It really is a joy.

    • Hi Laura, have a great week!

  5. ~A wonderful weekend with a great party to celebrate my youngest’s first birthday
    ~A dream that gave me great insight to a problem I’ve been having (The Lord has used dreams to help me throughout my entire life, my patron is St Joseph, so it’s apropos.)
    ~No more major commitments for the summer, so we can just relax and prepare before school starts.
    ~Pulled Pork ~Enchiladas and Pasta and meatballs are on the menu this week. Maybe some zucchini bread. ~I once said to my oldest daughter: “We don’t pay retail for anything, except our health.” I believe in investing in good preventative, natural health care. Sometimes that means buying the right bra ;)
    ~I’m praying for my middle schoolers, and asking intercessions from St. Cecelia, St. Joseph, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. John Bosco.

    • Mmmm, pulled pork sounds yummy and like something where there would be leftovers, so easy.

  6. Great CWA…as usual. I had to laugh…I have been wanting to put “new bra” on my list but I was embarrassed LOL! What a difference! I mean, I wear a good brand but don’t replace them as much as I should (expensive) but boy, when you put a new one on…you know you needed it…ahhh!

    I try to buy good t-shirts…ones with cotton and a little spandex so they don’t stretch out or fade too quick.

    And…summer sandals. These are a must. If I buy good ones, I get several summers out of them.

    I didn’t get to my CWA yet…don’t know if I will (gasp). I hate missing it but sometimes the time isn’t there. We will see what the Spirit works out.

    • Good morning Theresa. Don’t be embarrased, like I said, we’re all girls, or maybe I should have said women, but I refer to my in real life friends as girls so why not my computer friends too.

      I did wonder about talking about bras here, but then I thought, “How many times have I wished someone would have spoken up about ___ b/c that would have helped me out in some way…even if it only made me stop and assess my bra situation, LOL!

  7. ~ enough money to pay the bills
    ~ a new friend on base, hand picked from God, I’m sure.
    ~ a book she loaned me on Catholic unschooling, which I have leaned toward out of necessity mostly. I think it’s called The Little Way.
    ~ healthy children

    Funky Fusion Fahitas from Grace Before Meals, Father Leo Patalinghug mmmmmmm….they are amazingly good!

    I am praying for the repose of the soul of an old boss. I wish I could say I was praying more and fasting for the presidential election.

    Jenny, I love reading your posts. You may know this, but a great way to memorize is to post one line on the fridge and when you have that down, add one more. Just do it today. I’m sure Satan would love nothing more than for you to give up! Have a super week.
    Michell

    • Michelle…*The Little Way* is an awesome book…I think you will like it. The author is a Secular Carmelite so I am a bit biased LOL!

    • Thanks Michelle, I know about posting a verse somewhere that you see it to memorize it, I just forgot that I know to do that! I need to make up some note cards with the Magnificat on it.

      Again, I know we should be praying for the presidential elections, I have just forgotten to do that. So thanks for the reminder.
